Etan is from a Jewish family, his father was a refugee from postwar Soviet Europe. His cultural identity, as well as a history of being radicalized for his appearance (especially as a performer) has given him a keen insight into outsider perspectives. His background has led to an interest in the psychological impacts of exclusion and social oppression. He connects with characters who feel somehow left out of mainstream society.
Through his work as an educator and artistic director of an improv company, Etan has also participated in training and initiatives around anti-oppression, anti-racism, consent and community safety, diversity and inclusivity, and sexuality and gender power dynamics. Etan’s work combines comedy and genre as a way to heighten and dramatize these ideas, and make them accessible and dynamic to a general audience.
Etan holds an Honors BA from McGill University in English. He has nominations for Montreal English Critics Circle Awards, multiple Canadian Comedy Awards, was a semi-finalist and finalist at Stage 32 and Screencraft, and is the Winner of the Screencraft Fellowship.
